Competitive gaming may seem like a strange concept to some but
there is really no difference from playing a video game that
originates on a computer or console system versus playing a
game of baseball or basketball around the block. The only difference
is that the professional aspects of the latter games have been
around for much longer and are much more accepted whereas video
and computer games as a whole have been around for just over
forty years dating from Steve Russell's Spacewar in 1961. In
contrast, the first professional basketball game was played
in 1898, over a century ago and the game was invented in 1891.
It seems natural that video games would eventually move into
the competitive arena and surprising that it has taken so long.
Competitive gaming
is beginning to move into the mainstream, and although it still
has a long way to go, it's starting to adopt many of the same
conventions of established professional sports. After all, what
better way to prove your league a legitimate, competitive sport
than to incorporate the traditions of the accepted mainstream.
Things like sponsors, contracts and even celebrity endorsements
are starting to appear and the prize money is only going up
with the recent end of the Cyberathlete Professional League
World Tour totalling $1 million in prize money awarded for example.
This website aims
to initiate those who are unfamiliar with "pro" gaming
or those who were unaware that such a thing even existed by
highlighting some of the current leagues, some of the top players
and some of the games that are being played today.
